Healthy oceans and sustainable fisheries are important to everyone, from residents of small coastal communities to seafood lovers throughout the world. Protecting our oceans starts with you!

Eventually, everything runs to the sea, so the decisions you make every day - from fertilizing your lawn to washing your car, to the types of food you consume and the detergents you use - can impact the world's oceans.

Take the SeaAlliance Pledge, then join us to defend and promote healthy oceans and
sustainable fisheries.

Marine debris isn't just an eyesore, it's a threat to fish, seabirds and marine ammals. To date the Marine Alliance Conservation Foundation - a SeaAlliance affiliate - has collected over 1.5 million pounds of debris, and surveyed over 2,500 miles of coastline.

In 2008 the National Marine Fisheries Service awarded the Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation its Sustainable Fisheries Leadership Award for Coastal Habitat Restoration. The Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation was also awarded the 2010 Alaska Sealife Center's award for Stewardship and Sustainability for the program.

  • I choose to eat healthy, sustainable seafood. Seafood that is responsibly harvested is a healthy choice that also supports science-based management of the ocean and coastal communities, and reduces the sometimes negative impacts of other large scale food production activities.

  • I will avoid using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and toxic car cleaning products that may find their way into storm water drains and local drainages that empty into rivers, bays and eventually the ocean.

  • I will reduce my use of plastics including shopping bags and water bottles that often find their way into the ocean, where they pose a risk to marine mammals, birds and fish.
As someone who is concerned about the health of the oceans and the long term sustainably of our commercial fisheries and fishing communities, I am writing today to ask you to continue to support the world-class commercial fisheries off the coast of Alaska, and the regional management council process that developed these successful Catch Share programs.

Alaska's clear cold waters are home to some of the best managed fisheries in the world and dozens of small coastal communities where generations of residents have caught and processed this wild seafood to feed the Nation for decades. From halibut to sole and from crab to Pollock, more than seventeen species of fish off Alaska's coast are sustainably managed under world class 'Catch Share programs that have been developed by the fishermen, scientists and processors that depend on and understand these resources.

The health of Alaska's oceans and seas and the fishing communities should not be put at risk by poor planning and policies written by distant bureaucrats. Please protect our fisheries resources and communities by continuing to allow the regional fisheries management councils to study and design sustainable fisheries programs that are built on good science and a local understanding of the ocean that has evolved for decades.
